I received some pics today of the Red Unlimited's presentation, Unspoken desires for St. Lucia's Carnival which will be held on July 19 and 20th, 2010. I think these costumes are similar to the costumes offered in Trinidad; they are not scaled down and are hott. My faves are the Tempted to Touch (olive green), which reminds me of Spice's China and Burning Ecstacy (orange and pink), which has a huge headpice and collar. I know some people will see more similarities between these costumes and those from Trinidad which usually sparks a debate about "costume copying". My stance is "who cares?", why can't we see it from the position that Trinidad sets the standard for quality costumes in other carnivals. In addition, mas is a business and the designers in Trinidad do sell their designs to Carnivals outside of Trinidad to make money. It also gives those who did not get to go to Trinidad to experience some aspect of the Trini style Carnival. The problem is that persons in Trinidad see their costumes at a smaller Carnival being sold for a lot less than they paid in Trinidad but you have to take into consideration the market value for that Carnival.
